To Accompany and to Observe: Engaged Scholarship and Social Change Vis-à-Vis Sub-Saharan Transmigration in Morocco

In this interview with Sabina Barone, Mehdi Alioua—Sociology Professor at the Université Internationale de Rabat (International University of Rabat), Morocco—reflects on transformations that Sub-Saharan African migration has brought to Moroccan society over last two decades, in particular reference identity and denominations foreign others, internal regional dynamics (im)mobility, challenges social coexistence national policies. He proposes conceptual categories such as "transmigrant,” “migration by stages,” “migratory crossroads” capture complexity mobile experiences unfolding Morocco. Based his trajectory engaged scholarship favor migrants refugees, he calls for a renewed South-South North-South academic collaboration cross-fertilization through small scale, bottom-up research made possible friendship among scholars.
